Gum Grafting vs. Soft Tissue Grafting: Which One Do You Need?

Gum health plays a critical role in maintaining a strong, beautiful smile—but when gum tissue begins to recede or deteriorate, it can expose tooth roots, increase sensitivity, and even lead to tooth loss. To correct this, oral surgeons often recommend gum grafting or soft tissue grafting. While these terms are often used interchangeably, they can refer to slightly different procedures based on your unique needs.

At Central Valley Dental Implant and Oral Surgery Institute, our experienced surgeons—Dr. Bell, Dr. Rahn, Dr. Smith, Dr. Anderson, Dr. Bunnell, and Dr. Henriksen—are here to help patients throughout the Central Valley understand which grafting procedure is right for them.

What Is Gum Grafting?

Gum grafting specifically refers to a procedure used to treat gum recession. When gums recede, the roots of your teeth become exposed, making them more sensitive and vulnerable to decay or infection. A gum graft involves adding new tissue—usually taken from the roof of your mouth or a donor source—to the receding area.

Common reasons for gum grafting:

  • Exposed tooth roots due to gum recession
  • Gum disease (periodontitis) damage
  • Aesthetic improvement of uneven gumlines
  • Prevention of further recession and bone loss

What Is Soft Tissue Grafting?

Soft tissue grafting is a broader term that includes gum grafting but also refers to any surgical procedure that restores or augments the soft tissues in the mouth. It may be performed to:

  • Increase the thickness of the gums
  • Prepare the mouth for dental implants
  • Repair tissue after trauma or surgery
  • Improve gum volume for long-term oral health

While all gum grafts are technically soft tissue grafts, not all soft tissue grafts are performed due to gum recession. In many cases, soft tissue grafting is used in implant dentistry or to strengthen thin or fragile gums even before visible recession occurs.

Types of Grafting Techniques

Our surgeons may use one of the following techniques based on your oral health needs:

  • Connective Tissue Graft – Tissue is taken from beneath the surface of the palate and placed over the exposed root.
  • Free Gingival Graft – A thin layer of tissue is taken directly from the palate and attached to the gums; often used to thicken existing tissue.
  • Allograft or Donor Graft – Sterile, medically processed tissue from a donor is used instead of harvesting from the patient.

Each method has its benefits, and the right choice depends on the location, severity of the issue, and your overall treatment goals.

Which Procedure Do You Need?

The best way to determine whether you need gum grafting or soft tissue grafting is through a comprehensive oral evaluation. Our team at Central Valley Dental Implant and Oral Surgery Institute will assess:

  • The extent of gum recession or tissue loss
  • The health of surrounding bone and teeth
  • Any upcoming procedures (like dental implants)
  • Your aesthetic concerns and comfort level

We create a customized treatment plan that restores both function and appearance, ensuring long-term success and stability.

What to Expect During the Healing Process

Most grafting procedures are performed under local anesthesia or sedation for your comfort. Recovery generally involves:

  • Mild swelling or discomfort for a few days
  • Soft food diet for the first week
  • Avoiding brushing directly on the surgical site until healed
  • Full recovery within 1–2 weeks for most patients

Our team will provide detailed aftercare instructions and monitor your healing every step of the way.
